Immersion Week Program

Immersion Week is intended to allow for high-interest, hands-on, interactive learning outside of the normal classroom experience. Teachers work together to craft meaningful experiences for the students. Much time and planning goes into making these experiences spark the curiosity and interest of students.

2010 IMMERSION Activities

College Road Show (Byrne, Lacap & Soumare)
Where to go? What to do? Students will spend the week exploring various colleges. In the five day Immersion experience the students will visit 10-15 colleges and universities in the region.

Ghostbusters (Burke & Sommer)
DeSales is our name and ghosts are our game! Explore the supernatural world with Coach Burke and Mr. Sommer. Visit local cemeteries, participate in a staged séance, and tour the historic Waverly Hills Sanatorium…at midnight!

Go Fish! (Hammond)
Students will travel to Whitewater State Park in Liberty, IN to spend the week in the wilderness camping, fishing and hiking. There’s nothing like spending time in the great outdoors!

Golf School (Reed & Joyce)
FORE! Participants will receive golf instruction from PGA Professionals. They will have the opportunity to play two local golf courses, discuss the horticulture at golf courses, look at golf course design, and explore the history of golf.

Habitat for Humanity (Barney)
Students will learn the value of teamwork as they labor together to reach a common goal. They will spend the week constructing a home for those in need. (25 hours of service.)

History, Horses, & Nature (McAnally’s & Wisman)
Explore the rich history of Louisville! Take a walking tour of historic Main Street, visit the Frazier Arms Museum and the Little Loom House where “Happy Birthday” was written, learn more about the importance of the horse industry in Kentucky, and discover the underground world in the caverns beneath the Louisville Zoo. (2 hours of service.)

Investigating the Criminal Mind (Strong)
Explore the judicial system by participating in hands on activities such as creating a sketch of a suspect; learn how to evaluate crime scene evidence, and how to look for clues and tips.

Lincoln’s Kentucky and the Civil War (Trigg)
Discover the history of Lincoln’s life in our home state! Visit historical battle grounds across the state, the underground railroad museum in Cincinnati, and the birthplace of Lincoln.

Rambo Warrior (Moore)
Examine the military forces, both past and present, in the United States. Visit museums, the National Guard, and Fort Knox. Students will meet real members of the armed forces and see what goes on behind the scenes at Fort Knox with an over-night trip to the military base. (2 hours of service.)

Rome! Sorrento! Athens!  (Fiely & Bartlett)
Spend 11 days touring Rome and Sorrento, Italy and Athens, Greece.  Students will depart on March 18, 2010 and return on March 26, 2009.

School of Rock (Mattingly)
Learn to rock! Students will spend the week composing music and recording their own CD.

Service at the Beach (Quirk, McDaniel & Walsh)
Students will travel to Pensacola, FL to work with Waterfront Rescue Mission. Throughout the week participants will explore poverty, become more aware of social justice issues, and strengthen their faith and brotherhood while seeing the world through someone else’s eyes. There will also be time to relax and play on the beach! (20 hours of service)

Stained Glass 101 (Pohlmann)
Have you ever thought about doing hands on art projects? Learn to do stained glass projects.  This class will start with the beginning basics and you will finish the week with at least 2 completed stained glass pieces!!  A guest instructor will be on site on 4 different days to take you through the steps.  This is a great time to learn a new craft, make gifts for friends or family, and become a skilled artisan.

Survivor Man II  (Gilbert & Houpt)
Students will travel to the Great Smoky Mountains and spend 5 days camping and looking at the importance of conservation and preservation of natural habitats.

Under the Sea Adventure (Barnett, Schrage & Jahn)
Embark on a six day journey to Big Pine Key, Florida to snorkel in the coral reefs, kayak off of the Gulf Coast, and star gaze on the beach! This is a once in a lifetime chance to explore the sea hands-on! We will also spend time in Key West visiting local attractions and taking in the culture. Please note that this trip will leave on Friday, March 19th and return on Wednesday, March 24th.
