Immersion Week Program

Immersion Week is intended to allow for high-interest, hands-on, interactive learning outside of the normal classroom experience.

Teachers work together to craft meaningful experiences for the students.  Much time and planning goes into making these experiences spark the curiosity and interest of students.

2011 IMMERSION Activities

¡VAMOS A ESPAŇA! - Ms. Trigg and Mr. Sansbury
Our international Immersion is an eight day, all-inclusive tour to Barcelona and Madrid, Spain. The trip is open to all DeSales students and their families. These world class cities have so much to offer: rich history, museums, cathedrals, restaurants, and flamenco dancing! The tour includes 6 overnight stays in hotels with private bathrooms, all transportation, a full-time tour director, guided sightseeing and walking tours, breakfast and dinner daily, and a stop in Zaragoza. Experience an unforgettable journey to one of Europe’s most popular destinations – Spain!

Boston or Bust! - Ms. Strong and Mr. Ayersman
Travel to the largest city in the North East…Boston! While in Boston you will experience all of the rich history that the city has to offer. You will also visit Cambridge, Plymouth, and Salem. This four day adventure is a great opportunity to explore a piece of our country’s history.

Rambo Warrior - Mr. Moore and Mr. Johnson
Examine the military forces, both past and present, in the United States. Visit museums, the National Guard, and Fort Knox. Students will meet real members of the armed forces and see what goes on behind the scenes at Fort Knox with an over-night trip to the military base.

Grand Adventure - Ms. Barnett, Ms. Schrage and Mr. Barney
Bright lights, a big city, and lots of fun and adventures await students opting to join in on the Grand Adventure! This group will travel to Las Vegas, where they will visit the many sites and attractions in the city, explore the Grand Canyon, and tour the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead area.

Exploring Kentucky - Mr. Hammond, Mr. Houpt and Mr. Gilbert
Explore all that Kentucky has to offer! Hike, cave, camp, and canoe in the beautiful Red River Gorge.

College Road Show - Mr. Sommer and Mr. Soumare
Where to go? What to do? Students will spend the week exploring 10-15 colleges and universities in the region.

Ghostbusters - Ms. Osbourne and Mr. Gottbrath
DeSales is our name and ghosts are our game! Come and explore the supernatural world with Ms. Osbourne and Mr. Gottbrath. Visit local cemeteries, participate in a staged séance, and tour the historic Waverly Hills Sanatorium…at midnight!

Service Project - Ms. Hudson and Mr. Sander
Students will learn the value of teamwork as they labor together to reach a common goal. Time will be spent at local service agencies and service hours/credits will be awarded to those that participate based on the actual work completed. Manual labor is involved with this offering.

Golf School - Mr. Reed and Mr. Joyce
FORE! Participants will receive golf instruction from PGA Professionals. They will have the opportunity to play two local golf courses, discuss the horticulture at golf courses, look at golf course design, and explore the history of golf.

Louisville: History, Horses, and Culture - Mr. & Mrs. McAnally
Explore the rich history of Louisville! Take a walking tour of historic Main Street, visit the new arena, and visit Churchill Downs. Learn more about the importance of the horse industry in Kentucky, architecture, and industry in our city.

Top Chef - Mr. Jahn and Ms. Bartlett
Do you enjoy food? Are you interested in learning about the world of culinary arts? Then this Immersion is for you! Experience different types of cuisine and shop to prepare your own meal.

On the Air: Broadcasting 101 - Ms. McCoy and Mr. Sanford
Learn about the world of broadcast and print journalism in this four day exploration. Visit local TV/radio stations, newspapers, etc. and see all of the hard work and excitement that goes into creating what we are exposed to on a daily basis.

“Me” in Media - Ms. Quirk and Ms. McDaniel
Experience media in a new way, or at least with a new perspective! From music to movies, IM’s to the internet, you are affected by media! We will spend time experiencing and processing media presentations in its various forms both on campus and around town. On the last day student teams will create a movie or music video expressing media’s influence on society. This will be a great experience – fun, but requiring effort and enthusiasm from participants!

Fanatics, Fitness, & Fun - Mr. Strothman and Mr. Cataldo
A physically action oriented Immersion in which students will have fun while experiencing a variety of sporting, fitness and action oriented activities. Additionally, students will explore sports management, new types of physical activities, and learn that fitness really can be fun!
