Scholarships
The following scholarship programs are available to DeSales High School students:
St. Elias Scholarship
The St. Elias Scholarship is a $1000, one-time scholarship awarded to any incoming freshman who scores in the 90th percentile or above on the placement test composite score. The student continues to carry the academic honors of the St. Elias Scholarship throughout his DeSales career if he maintains a minimum 3.25 grade point average.
Holy Rosary Foundation Scholarship
The Holy Rosary Foundation awards four $1,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen at DeSales based on financial need and scholastic achievement. These awards are renewable for each of the recipients’ three remaining years at DeSales. DeSales utilizes its financial aid process to determine eligibility. Recipients must maintain a “C” grade average for the scholarship to be renewed. Preference for this scholarship is given to sons of Holy Rosary Academy alumni or former students.
Rex Robinson Memorial Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship was established in memory of former Athletic Director Rex Robinson, a long-time teacher and coach at DeSales. The criteria for this award include need, good character, academic achievement and school involvement. The scholarship is typically awarded to a returning student and is announced during Awards Day in May.
William T. Owen Scholarship
DeSales High School awards the William T. Owen Scholarship to one student each year. This endowed scholarship fund was established in memory of past parent William T. Owen and is a $500 need-based scholarship. Selection of this scholarship is based on other financial aid distributed and does not require an application.
Shackleton Foundation Scholarships
The William I. Shackleton Foundation was established in memory of Billy Shackleton, class of 1971. Shack was a successful international businessman who remained close to his friends at DeSales during his professional career. Retiring in his mid 40s and returning home to Louisville, Shack contributed substantial time, talent and treasure at DeSales to build the baseball building and to spur growth in the DeSales Alumni Association. In the fall of 2001, Shack was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away five short months later. In 2002, Shack's wife and friends established the Shack Foundation and began distributing financial aid scholarships to students wanting a DeSales education. In order to receive a grant, the family of the student must demonstrate financial need; the applicant must demonstrate a good disciplinary and academic record; and priority is given to applicants who are active in their parish or community. The Board of Directors evaluates each application, makes selections and determines award amounts.
