Get to Know Lance Hammond, Dean of Students

Coach Lance Hammond began his career at DeSales as a basketball coach and assistant athletic director in 2006, later serving as dean of students for juniors and seniors. Now his role includes serving in this position for all students (since 2010). As the dean of students, Coach Hammond enjoys working with students for personal growth and helping them become better men.

Why did you choose to work at DeSales? 
I choose to work at DeSales because DeSales was more like a parish than a school; it was an amazing community that embraced me.  

 

What do you think has been the most positive change/impact since your time at DeSales, and why? 
The facilities have been updated to provide additional opportunities.

 

What do you see DeSales doing in the future to make an impact with students and/or the community? 
STEM opportunities continue to develop to provide skills for the future.

 

Why should alumni and friends support DeSales? 
We have incredible young men in this building who are worth the investment.

 

What have you learned from the students? 
I have learned how difficult the world is for young people today and how important self-discipline is for their success.

 

What is your proudest moment at DeSales? 
My proudest moment was watching my son Michael graduate in 2013.

 

What is your motto or personal mantra? 
“It’s not what happens to you in life that matters….it’s how you react to it.” 

 

What is your biggest achievement to date - personal or professional? 
My family….wife Shannon and children Michael (24), Trent (9), and Grayce (7).

 

What would others be surprised to find out about you? 
I love to cook.

 

How do you spend your summer breaks? 
I spend my summer traveling with my family.

 

If you could take the students on a field trip anywhere in the world, where would you take them?  
I would take students to Giza, Egypt.

 

What were you like as a student?
Oh, not very well behaved, my classmates laugh when they hear I am now a school disciplinarian……... I guess it takes one to know one:)

 

How do you show school spirit?
I show school spirit by getting involved and participating at school events.
