DeSales High School is pleased to announce Ryan Smith as the new head coach of the varsity lacrosse program. A lifelong Catholic, Ryan moved to Louisville at age ten and grew up immersed in athletics, competing in multiple sports and earning All-State honors in lacrosse.
He began his collegiate lacrosse career at Bellarmine University as part of the inaugural program before completing his degree at Western Kentucky University, where he also played rugby. Ryan remains active today through basketball, lacrosse, golf, and outdoor activities.
With eighteen years of coaching experience, Ryan will enter his fifteenth season as a head coach this spring. His leadership spans several Louisville-area programs, including North Oldham High School, Kentucky Country Day, Christian Academy, and Louisville Collegiate School.
Across these programs, his teams have achieved district championships, Final Four appearances, and state finals runs.
Beyond coaching, Ryan has dedicated his career to student development and leadership. At Louisville Collegiate School, he supported admissions, assisted in athletic operations, led the school’s sports performance program, and taught public speaking. His commitment to service extends to St. Albert PREP and the Boys & Girls Club through the PLL Play Initiative.
Ryan and his wife, Crystal, were married at St. Thomas and are parents to two children, Adeline and Max, who attend St. Albert the Great.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join the DeSales community and lead the varsity lacrosse program to new heights. A special thank you to Dr. Blackwell and Mr. Evans for entrusting me with this position" Coach Smith said in a statement.
Welcome to the family, Coach!
