Todd Herl, a Louisville native, graduated from DeSales High School in 1988, where he played football and made lifelong friendships. His favorite DeSales memories include two-a-day practices, Friday night gatherings after games, and the friendships that have remained throughout the years. He also remembers Tony Medley as one of his favorite teachers.
Todd has spent the past 32 years at Churchill Downs, where he serves as Sign Department Manager. His work includes designing and installing signage throughout the track, including the names of Kentucky Derby winners in the Paddock and the iconic sign on the roof that marks the beginning of Derby preparations.
Todd has brought those same talents to DeSales, quietly serving the school for decades. He has created signage, murals, locker room lettering, player nameplates, parking and event signs, and countless other projects throughout campus—without ever charging us for his services. He has also been a longtime supporter of DeSales football and helped establish the tailgate tradition that continues today.
Todd and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of Christopher and Bailie Herl. A true behind-the-scenes Colt, Todd’s work may not always be seen—but his impact certainly is.
